Sugar will be presented as a “work in development,” a production format that allows for audience feedback after each performance – a critical phase of the play writing process. Using audience comments and observations, McKay may make adjustments to the script, which will be incorporated into the following weekend’s performances. Audiences are encouraged to return multiple times to see how the play develops over the run.
In Sugar, Didi Gray’s life is already on the wrong side of up when the play opens: her successful career is barely a memory, her best friend is on dialysis, and she’s sharing her apartment with a rat. And that’s just the beginning. Playwright McKay’s brisk dialogue and humorous story-telling belie the darker undertone of the play until Didi is presented with an option that could revitalize her life – at the cost of her soul. Should she grab it? This moral conundrum is the crux of the play and audience feedback is eagerly sought.
In addition to McKay, who is also directing, other Ventura County theater favorites are involved in the production, both on stage and off. In the cast of Sugar are Leslie Annreneé, Elixeo Flores, Kathleen Bosworth, and Loni Kate English. Jill Dolan and Anthony Stetson are co-producing, and lighting design is by Allan Noel. Carol Citron is stage managing, and special projections are being created by Larry Swerdlove.
Seating Backstage@SPTC is limited, and – even with “pay-what-you-can” prices – reservations are strongly suggested. Make them at the SPTC box office, (805) 525-4645, or on-line at www.santapaulatheatercenter.org.
