It’s a 1963 musical that was based on Miklos Laszlo’s play “The Shop Around the Corner” which became a Jimmy Stewart movie and served as the inspiration for the movie “You’ve Got Mail”. It was revived on Broadway in 1993 and in London in 1994 won all kinds of awards on both sides of the Atlantic. It’s a story of mistaken identity with letters to the lovelorn prominent and all set in a 1937 parfumerie in Budapest.
Frank Rich in the New York Times said of the revival “you keep thinking you cannot digest an array of desserts (such as this show) no matter how attractive and tasty they are, but you find yourself relishing nearly all of them.” Clive Barnes of The Times said in 1963 “I loved it.” Chapman of the New York Daily News said “so charming, so deft, so light that it makes all the other musical shows in the big Broadway shops look like clodhoppers.”
