A battle of the sexes ensues when Princess Ida leaves Prince Hilarion waiting at the altar in Ventura County Gilbert & Sullivan Repertoire Company’s upcoming production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Princess Ida or Castle Adamant. The battle occurs March 9th-25th, at Hillcrest Center for the Arts, Thousand Oaks. Gilbert aims his humorous barbs at the feminist movement, the aristocracy and our penchant for battling out our difficulties whether our swords be words or weapons. Princess Ida is based on Alfred Lord Tennyson’s epic poem, The Princess. Lady Psyche (Amanda Benjamin) puts the teaching of Princess Ida’s (Julie Barnett) seminary for women very succinctly when she sings that “Darwinian man, though well-behaved, is really only a monkey shaved.” Prince Hilarion (Jonathan Matthews (3/11-24; Jonathan Tran 3/09-10) and friends, Cyril and Florian (Caleb Heulitt and Anthony Moresi), don academy garb and attempt to infiltrate the seminary as new female students, hoping to win back his bride (promised to each other at the tender age of 1 and 2 years) and avoid war between the kingdoms of their fathers, King Hildebrand (Colin Fluxman) and King Gama (Gary Saxer). Joined by many of the company regulars, and several new faces, Princess Ida promises to be another wonderful addition to the VCGSRC productions of the Gilbert & Sullivan canon. Tickets available at the Hillcrest Center box office: 805-381-1246 or on-line at www.hillcrestarts.com. For more information please call VCGSRC at 805-491-6103 or e-mail [email protected]
