This classic 1954 musical version of Faust was based on Douglass Wallopp’s novel, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant about a middle-aged real estate salesman named Joe Boyd who makes a deal with the devil to become Joe Hardy and rescue the Washington Senators, the American League’s perennial doormat, from another losing season. The score, by Richard Adler & Jerry Ross, includes such classic songs as “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Heart,” and “Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, Mo.”
