CHICAGO: HIGH SCHOOL EDITION is an American musical based on the play Chicago by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, the musical takes place during the roaring 20s jazz age in Chicago and tells the story of two rival murderesses locked up in the Cook County Jail. Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian nightclub sensation, ends up in jail after murdering her cheating husband and sister. Roxie Hart, a fame-hungry housewife, lands in jail for killing her secret lover when she discovers he is not going to make her a star. Both women vie for the attention of Billy Flynn, the slick and sleazy Chicago attorney defending them who turns their incarcerations into a media frenzy and manipulates the tabloids to his benefit. Neither woman will be outdone in their fight against each other for the publicity and fame that will keep them from their fate.
