The California Lutheran University Theatre Arts Department is presenting an absurdist one-act play set in an insane asylum in October.
“Chamber Music” will be staged at 9 p.m. from Wednesday, Oct. 7, through Saturday, Oct. 10, in Preus-Brandt Forum on the Thousand Oaks campus. Admission is free.
The play by Arthur Kopit is set in 1938, the year after aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared. Earhart and seven other famous women from different historical periods including Joan of Arc, Queen Isabella I of Spain, Susan B. Anthony and Gertrude Stein appear to be interned in an insane asylum. Fearing an attack by the men’s ward, the women come together to figure out how to stop it from happening.
Emily Faye Hare, a senior theater arts major from Newbury Park, directs. The Newbury Park High School graduate has gained considerable experience through her work with the Young Artists Ensemble, a Thousand Oaks-based community theater group for children and teens, during the last few years. She was the assistant director for the 2012 production of “Cabaret,” which won five National Youth Arts Awards, and the 2014 staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which received six of the awards. Also in 2014, Hare was the assistant director for “Aladdin, Jr.” presented by the Young Artists Ensemble in conjunction with the Conejo Theatre for Everyone, which provides opportunities for actors with disabilities to participate in theater and take on substantial roles.
The ensemble cast of “Chamber Music” features Noor Baghai, a music major from Issaquah, Washington; Michael Berquist, a music major from Lakewood, Colorado; Leah Dalrymple, a theater arts major from Simi Valley; Christine Dauzat, a business administration major from Chatsworth; Danika Elvine, a theater arts major from Camarillo; Karli Fisher, an accounting major from Woodway, Texas; Will Haddock, a theater arts major from Wellesley, Massachusetts; Allie Leslie, a music major from Flagstaff, Arizona; Brooke Sikkema, a theater arts major from Stevenson Ranch; and Theresa Wegher-Thompson, a theater arts major from Thousand Oaks.
Preus-Brandt Forum is located at 135 Chapel Lane.
