Presented in arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc. on behalf of The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee the classical American drama A Streetcar Named Desire, is easily one of the most influential works of modern American literature. In this riveting story of raw emotion, conflict and loss, Tennessee Williams explores passion with daring honesty, and forges a poetic theatre of multidimensional psychological insight that shatters conventional proprieties and transformed the American stage.
A Streetcar Named Desire reveals to the very depths the character of Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject-so far as possible-the realities of life with which she is faced and which she consistently ignores. The pressure brought to bear upon Blanche by her sister, Stella, with whom she goes to live in New Orleans and only intensifies when Stella’s earthy and extremely ‘normal’ young husband, Stanley, leads her to a revelation of tragic self-delusion and madness.
