Moorpark College Theatre Arts is pleased to announce its presentation of William Shakespeare’s classic tale of love and tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet,” to run March 12th thru March 22ndin the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Moorpark College. This main stage production will feature full Elizabethan costumes, exhilarating sword fights and classical music and dance.
In this iconic story of love and loss, Shakespeare weaves a fine tapestry of young romance destroyed by family enmity as the audience falls in love with the two star-crossed teenagers only to witness their tragic end in the final moments of the play. The poetic moments between the young lovers begins with a spontaneously composed sonnet and continues throughout the play; embracing the all too familiar lines of romantic poetry that have found their way into our hearts and minds since high school. The cast of characters in this play both delight and inspire as the comedic takes between Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, and Juliet’s Nurse are some of the finest light-hearted moments in Shakespeare’s repertoire. All of this combined with the pageantry of the classical costumes, the intrigue of the missed communications and the jaw-dropping excitement of live sword fights performed on the stage and it’s clear to see why this play has been so widely embraced for generations around the world.
“This is going to be a truly a wonderful production,” said John Loprieno, Director and Department Chair of the Performing Arts. “We’ve been able to bring in so many specialists for this production that we are providing our students the experience of classical play production at a professional level. Dane Michael Oliver, who has worked with the Kingsmen and Theatricum Botanicum, has joined us as our Fight Choreographer, classical costumes are being designed by our Theatre Arts Costuming faculty member, Haleh Risdana, and constructed by our Costume classes and crews, Sydney Sims, our English Department Chair, has taken on Dramaturg responsibilities and Nancy Ferraro-Paradis from our Dance program has Choreographed four amazing pieces for this production. The entire campus is talking about “Romeo and Juliet,” and, with the increased demand, we’ve had to add an additional performance to our regularly scheduled FREE matinees for local high schools and we’ve been asked to do a sword fighting demonstration for the community at the Moorpark College Spring Festival on campus that’s open to the public on March 14th. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to see this passion and interest in Shakespeare!”
