The action of the play all takes place in one large room of a stately English manor, but shuttles between the first years of the 19th Century and the present. Inhabitants and guests of the Croom family strutting about in coattails and gowns give way to modern men and women in shirtsleeves and sneakers, then back again… culminating in a final magical scene in which characters from both times move about the scene blissfully unaware of their worlds’ intertwining. “Arcadia” explores the complex relationships between past and present, order and chaos, speculation and knowledge, all the while keeping us moored to the befuddled inanity and simple grace that is the human condition.
